Paying for your own tag

Here's another crazy idea but then again... it is one of those "why didn't I think of this ?" ideas and they certainly have merit.

1000tags.com is a "tag cloud page" that allows you to buy your own private tag exclusively or - if you wish to stay in the open philosophy of tagging - pay for a shared tag. The exclusive tag will only forward to your blog or website and you can pay according to the font size you want to give it.

From their website:

1000tags.com is - that we know - the very first project that offers booking and buying tags from a "tag cloud". Or in other words, it is the first commercial tag cloud. That means that it could be the proof of concept demonstrating that folksonomies can be an effective way to advertise.

Question is; can this work, is the proof of concept viable ?

I think it will be a very interesting way to get clicks at first but like with many other online promotion tools I believe that the "tag cloud" will get overloaded and become less relevant/credible by time. At the end of the day it all comes down to content in the long run.

But in the meantime, yes I'll try to get my free tag and I do believe it will draw traffic to my blog. And if this brings in some nice money - the anonymous creators of 1000tags.com hope for a 4 digit amount - then good for you !
